Regarding>Once and for all--should I rent a car?<
Yes.
Of course it's possible to take taxis and takes buses, and make arrangements with people you meet, but the Niagra region is fairly big, there's lots to see in lots of places, and in the whole sceme of things, the cost of a car unused for a day is not very much compared to the conveninece of having it for the othr days.

BAK (or anyone)
John Daly is appearing Weds. Aug. 3 (according to his website)
It doesn't say how long he'll be in town or in this event.
Does anyone know?
Do you think it will continue through the weekend (5-7th) and how that will effect hotel rates, crowds ect?
Thank you for any information you can provide.

We visited the falls last year and altough it was in September we stayed at the Marriott Renassaince Hotel for $39 U.S. through Priceline. The hotel was great and we had a super view of the falls. Give it a try!

I just came across your post from Feb. about your planned trip to Niagara Falls in August for 2 nights. I'm sure you have everything planned by now...assuming you're still coming, but I just wanted to say that I am an American from Buffalo, New York, who's lived in Niagara Falls, Ontario, for 28 years of marriage to a wonderful Canadian boy...and welcome you to our city. The Canadian side of the Falls is beautiful and more developed than the U.S. side...there is pristine beauty in an undeveloped section on the U.S. side, but as far as tourist attractions, the U.S. side unfortunately has been a victim of recession and poor planning. I'm assuming you rented a car...you will definitely need one...a drive on the Niagara Parkway along the Niagara River from the Falls to Niagara-on-the-lake is one of the most beautiful drives in teh world. I am not exaggerating. I agree with others that the parking here is expensive ..I'm a resident and can't even get down to the Falls...although I do believe that parking in the new Fallsview Casino is free. If you are capable of doing a bit of walking, park there and go walking...also, there is an EXCELLENT shuttle system for tourists called the "People Mover"...you park just a bit past the Horseshoe Falls and take the People Mover along the river to many of the attractions. Don't miss the Maid of the Mist, and the Journey Beneath the Falls if you don't mind getting wet (they provide free thin plastic raincoats). The Aero Car over the gorge is wonderful also (and dry!). You will not have much time, so don't waste it at Clifton Hill...it's for kids and very expensive. Do as much as you can to see the natural beauty of the Falls and the river gorge. If you like history, make sure you DO drive to Niagara-on-the Lake...that's the location of Fort George, which is the Fort that defending what is now Canada against the U.S. in the war of 1812. Keep in mind, however, that Canadians have a different persective of that war! It can be VERY hot and humid in August, so dress cool. And yes there is mist right by the Falls most of the time...get a cheap poncho or go on one of the attractions and don't throw away the raincoat they give you. There is live music around 8 and then fireworks over the Falls every Friday & Sunday night at 10. They are extremely well done. Also, there is a famous tightrope walker (Jay Cochrane) who walks from the Casino to a hotel and also up to the Skylon tower on different days of the week. If you want specifics on that, or anything else, email me at [email protected] - man, you really need to book a longer trip next time! (You didn't mention your ages or kids, so I didn't mention kid attractions...like Marineland, which is expensive but worth the money...some other poster mentioned a Lion Safari...that's in Cambridge, Ontario, nowhere near here.)
Have fun!

NewbieTraveler - I'm getting the idea you're headed for Niagara Falls.
I wanted to share some info I found out. Once the new season starts, check out www.niagaraparks.com for their passes. They have a one-time pass (Adventure Pass) and a Season Pass that could save you at some money. I found for my trip that I will save over $20 with the Season Pass (even though I'm there for only 3 days).
