Weather/temps in NSW mid Dec to mid Jan-What to pack??

Our family will be in Sydney, Melbourne, the GOR and the Blue Mountains between Dec. 18 and Jan. 6. Any suggestions as to what clothing to bring? I'm guessing it will be very hot, but also possibly very wet. Was also advised that it could be chilly in the evenings, for example NYE in Sydney. Not sure what to expect in the Blue Mtns.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Very chilly in the evenings? Shouldn't think so. Perhaps a light cardigan or double something as a rain jacket.

Usually hot, possibly humid, perhaps some rain, cooler at night in the mountains.

Having said this, we'll probably be inundated with sleet and snow!

As above, you may need a light jacket, wrap or similar as a precaution.

It can be hot, wet and maybe a little bit chilly, but I would be surprised if it got really cold. Generally you should expect a warm summer with rainy periods - a light rain jacket and maybe a fleece should be enough, and latter one more for being inside air conditioned buildings than for cold nights...

Generally. Maximum of about 40C but usually mid 20s to mid 30s. Minimums of around 15C.

It can vary quickly. Melbourne's hottest Christmas Day was followed by the coldest Boxing Day!

Thanks everyone. As usual, it comes down to layers! I didn't think about chilly restaurants due to AC, however.

A light cotton sweater (we say 'jumper') or a windcheater ('sloppy joe') are probably sufficient for Sydney if it is a bit rainy and cool at night. This morning in the Herald they said this would be Sydney's wettest December in 20 years, not sure about January yet. We've already had a considerable amount of rain, which my garden is enjoying immensely. You might think about bringing a small umbrella or maybe one of those thin rain ponchos that folds down to nothing.

Wait a couple of weeks to find out how things are shaping up. If the rain dries up you could get temperatures of 40 degrees (hope not, both for your sake and mine).

Hard to know what to hope for if less rain means higher temperatures! We leave the USA on Dec. 16 and will get together our rain gear in preparation for a wet sojourn in Australia. Our daughter is studying abroad in Sydney and mentioned all the rain--I'm not sure that she reads the papers for the weather forecasts, though.

OK, I will try to post something about the weather closer to your departure date.
