Hunter Valley
Hi there,
We are flying through Sydney on our way to New Zealand, and will be there for a night each way. We have already been to Australia and seen the major sights in Sydney and the Blue Mountains, and will have another night to enjoy in the city on our way out. We arrive fairly early in the morning on day 1, and my thought was to rent a car and drive to the Hunter Valley, as we love Australian wines. Any ideas for the best wineries to visit and/or restaurant recommendations there? We have all day and fly out to Christchurch the next morning. We would prefer smaller boutique wineries over the big guys like Lindeman's, but if there are some good tasting rooms (or I think they are Cellar Doors there maybe?) we shouldn't miss I'd love the hear about them. Thanks so much.

You might want to check www.chowhound.com/boards. Go to the top under international destinations and then click see all boards and then click Australia/NZ. This is a blog devoted to food and wine. You might have better luck asking this question there.

Scarborough is one of our favorites. We love their wines and have enjoyed them for many years. Www.scarborouwine.com.au.
I hope you enjoy your day in the Hunter. It's one of our favorite places, our daughter's wedding is being held there next March. If you have time for a nice lunch then a coup,e of suggestions are The Verandah which does a lovely tapas style lunch or You could try bimbadgen estate which offers a lovely tasting plate with matched wines.
