I have several single female friends living in Potts Point and Elizabeth Bay who love the area, night life, cafes, convenience to the city and proximity to the harbour. They also have no problem with safety.

Perhaps Kaneda visited several years ago when Sydney was "new and brash" and the Gold Coast was "nice".

Seriously, I do think if someone is giving advice, it would help if they have visited recently.

I hate to get into an argument but Kaneda, you post some statements which would be laughable except that you may negatively influence some newbies. I still remember this gem about Uluru:

<<Anything to do with Ayer's Rock is a rip-off. It's a lump of rock that isn't worth going a mile for let alone a thousand miles. Take a train in southern India and you'll see all the table mountains there that you want and some may even have similar silly superstitions attached to them by equally ignorant people.>>

Wow, I missed that little outpouring of bile by kaneda, Sarvowinner. She seems to have had a bad case of SOL that day. The more I read of her posts, the more I doubt that she's ever set foot in Australia.

As it happens I'm currently reading John Birmingham's "Leviathan", a most entertaining take on the history of Sydney, and there's no doubt that the city was "new and brash" (to put it mildly) in the early 19th century. However I would have thought that a couple of hundred years make a small difference. Presumably a city is only worth visiting if it's whatever the opposite of new and brash is - old and sedate, perhaps? (Like the Gold Coast?)

Hi NeilOz & Sarvowinner

I'm surprised at kaneda's apparent antipathy for all things Australian, too. Pleasant & helpful on the European & other boards - the difference here is quite marked. Clearly something in or from our little island has ruffled his/her tailfeathers.

Neil, Bokara and LizF (who has also remarked on K's comments on another thread)

While I think in future we should "consider the source", it is difficult to remain silent when such nasty comments are made and it could mislead newbies. Hard one, isn't is?

Neil - I'll have to read Leviathian. His back to the future WW2 books were quite clever.

Bokhara, not always so pleasant and helpful on Asia board - see Kaneda's comments on "King of Kowloon Dies" running at about no 71 now.

Impossible for me to remain silent on Kaneda's take of Ayers Rock and grossly insulting to Aboriginal people.

I had noticed that the King of Kowloon thread was popular but hadn't looked at it lately. Just searched for it and it seems to have been pulled - why?

This little gem is from Kaneda:

I quite liked Chile but there is little to see there. Most things worth seeing in South America are in Peru.

.......................................

I must admit that I have only been to South America 6 times but I think Chile is one of the most beautiful places on earth - the lakes district, Terra del Paine, The Beagle Channel, the volcano district, The area of the glaciers, the Atacama Desert, the Andes which are right in your face 40 minutes west of Santiago etc etc etc.
I first became suspicious of Kaneda's comments when I read where she said that the roads in Santiago were nice and wide but in Buenos Aires they seems narrow and congested ( or something to that effect). In reality Buenos Aires has the widest Boulevard in the World and the area around the commercial district has lovely parks, wide streets and is delightful. The only areas that have narrow streets are those in San Telmo and La Boca which are very old areas but those areas are very interesting in that they are filled with fabulous shops with craft and the greatest antique shops anywhere. All the other things that Kaneda mentioned in the posts could be found in any one liners on any brochure found anywhere in the World i.e " it is a one hour bus trip to Valparasio from Santiago" the fact that the road is lined with Gum Trees and wattles and there are vineyards everywhere and that the cost of the bus trip is about $4 and you can get a bus from the main bus station in Santiago about every 15 minutes and that said bus is extremely comfortable and a luxury style bus - this was not mentioned. Nor was another that really gives any information about anywhere ever mentioned.

I keep forgetting to proof read my posts - I meant to say that there had been no other helpful information given in other posts about places other than where K lives now or where K used to live i.e UK. Makes you wonder about the agenda!
