May is winter in both countries and really not good tourist weather with the exception of the far north of Australia.
October is the start of spring with cool weather and the possibility of rain. You could start your holiday in Queensland or Northern Territory before the start of their wet season and continue your travels south and then onto New Zealand.

Marg,
Thanks very much.If May is not a nice time to go, and October is not the best time, because of the rain, which month do you recommend me?I am a little worried, living so far from these countries, I will do my best to get the right time to go!

So much depends on which parts of Australia you want to go to. The wet season in northern Australia goes from November to March and can be very wet, very humid with the possibility of cyclones. On the other hand, November to March are ideal times to visit the southern part of Australia (from Sydney down) and New Zealand. October isn't bad in both places as long as you are prepared to get some rain.
