when is the months to travel New Zealand

Hi everybody,
My wife and I planning a trip to North and South Island. Based on what we read so far have a hard time to decide on the best months to travel based on the weather. Here are our options:
November 20 to December 10
January 20 to February 10
February 20 to March 12
Please, tell us which one is the best month to do all the sightseeing (escpecially in South Island. Is it rain a lot in the summer time?).
Thank you for your help.

Hi Gustav:
We were in the South island from last November 1 thru 25. The weather was marvelous. I believe it was late spring or early summer because the days were glorious and the evenings were rather cool. Cool enough to wear a light jacket. As I recall it rained one or two days during this time period.
We headquartered in Queenstown for two weeks and took day trips to Dunedin and Invercargill. We then moved on to Christchurch and took day trips to see the whales at Kaikoura, Arthurs Pass and other points of interest.
You'll love New Zealand.
John

Out last visit to NZ was from 15 November to 10 December - we had everything from beautiful sunshine to snow. The period January 20 to February 10 will probably include some of the summer school holidays so it may be difficult getting motel accommodation as you travel around.
We have also been in NZ in March when the weather was very stable, reasonably mild.

I lived in N.Z. for my first 32 years. February is the hottest month (at least it was 31 years ago!) I'd go anytime from January through March, take your pick. Have a great time!

I just spent the whole month of Nov in NZ. While we had a wonderful time we were fighting the weather the whole time. Lots of rain and wind and cold esp in the South Island. I had to buy warm clothes while there. If I ever return(and I hope I can) I would not go in the spring (Oct-Nov). Rather, I would choose summer or early fall.
Regardless, have a wonderful time.
