We walked across. It takes a while, but once we got to the other side, we enjoyed soda at a store, at looked at the views. Also on the other side, is Luna Park, a great old amusement park, worth a look at the Coney Island-like structures, even if you're not into the rides. A good idea might be to ferry there, and then walk back. That way, you won't have to walk both ways, and you will be facing the SYdney harbor view the whole way back.

We walk across the bridge often.
From the milson's point railway station steps to the steps at the rocks (near the australian hotel) takes about 25 minutes.
You can continue on around the cahill walk across the "top" of the quay and down into the botanical geardens if you like.Interesting exhibit done in glass on this walk at the top of the quay.
My classic sydney summer morning might be:
catch the ferry from circular quay wharf 4 to milson's point.(take a towel and swimmers)Ferry goes under the bridge.
take your photo in front of the smiling face at luna park.
swim your laps at North Sydney pool (the most picturesque urban pool anywhere)
have breakfast at Ripples (waterfront cafe in front of the pool)
walk under the bridge and up to milsons point station
walk across the bridge
stop at the south east pylon and see the exhibit
go down the steps at the top of the rocks and have a beer at the roof top bar at the Glenmore hotel
chuckle to yourself when you see the ppl coming out of the bridgeclimb ($150) when you have done similar for $30.
That being said I have never met anyone who having done the bridgclimb didn't think it was great.

Apparently I'm already going to Luna park (others I'm travelling with have decided) so my contribution was to walk across the bridge.
I like the ferry idea, so I'll tell them about that and we mightn't get too many complaints about the distance (they're wimps LOL).
Thanks

I have only one small thing to add to John's excellent itinerary above.
There is an absolutely wonderful view of the Opera House and Sydney from the Milson's Point side of the Bridge, but it's not from the Luna Park (western) side, but the eastern side, from the park at Olympic Drive. If you're too late for breakfast at Ripples, a good alternative might be to have a picnic from this spot and just gaze at the scenery.

The walk across for myself was most enjoyable. You can return to ferry location or any where else by bus or train. Also ferry. I had all day pass and it really is worth the price. Camera should be well loaded as many wonderful sites to take pic's from while going across. The bridge climb is not cheap so i did not bother. Lunar park rather nice again many pic. opps. Also check out for your day to go as on week end i believe you can visit a flea market that has lots of interesting items. I forgot what day it was when i went since i was just wandering Sydney at the time and was pleasantly surprised to find the market.

dustkicker - I think it must have been a Sat if you are talking about a market on the north side not too far from the bridge. Kirribilli Mkt - and you got lucky cos it's only held once a month (4th Saturday).
The advice above to combine a ferry trip with a walk across the bridge is spot on.
PS if you like markets - there's one in Rozelle every Sat & Sun, and in Balmain every Sat. Both suburbs west of the city and a short ferry or bus ride away. Lots of good eateries too!
