Waitomo Adventures-Lost World 4 hour Abseil

Has anyone done this? It looked pretty cool. I'm thinking of doing the repel next month on my way to Rotorua.

Although 4 hrs seems like an awful long time for the whole adventure. Is the hike out of the caverns what takes the longest? Any comments would be appreciated!

Definitely do it, it is SOOO much fun. We selected the Black Water rafting II and the whole trip probably lasted around 6hrs and we wished it could be longer. It took almost 2 hours for the orientation, putting on the wetsuit, drive to the site, instructions, etc. It took awhile for everyone to abseil down and since it's one by one, it can take longer depending on the group size.

Once everyone is down, the guides led us through the mazes of tunnels, floated on the inner tube while gazing at the beautiful blue glow worms around us. We had lunch in the cave with hot chocolate. Much welcomed because it's hard work to enjoy yourself and water was cold also. We ditched the inner tube and started our journey back to the lighted world.

After a hot shower, we were treated to bagels and hot tomato soup. One regret is that we didn't buy any postcards. Our pictures didn't come out because our underwater camera didn't have flash. Postcards will help capture your wonderful experience.

If we ever go back, I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. Even if it's more experience, I'd recommend the longer version and 4hrs will fly by. Enjoy and happy travels.

I agree about the blackwater rafting trip - a great experience! The Lost World tour is a whole different thing though - with a long abseil down a sinkhole crater before exploring the caves at the bottom of the sinkhole. A wonderful trip, provided you are not afraid of heights! As mentioned above, it takes so long because of preparation, travel, waiting in line to descend and climb out, then 'de-briefing'.

There are several different adventures to be had in the Waitomo area, ranging from slightly adventurous (blackwater rafting), to very adventurous (Lost World), to totally insane (Honkin' Haggis Holes). Depends on what you like.

Wish I had heard of Honkin' Haggis Holes. I'll have to remember this for next time. Thanks Alf.

Do it! I did the absail and I was the only customer!! (on a Saturday morning, even) Really nice having a personal guide. I was nervous at first when I stood on the platform, but it was then OK when I started down. According to my notes, they have one guide go down for every two customers - the guide on a rope between the customers. Very safe. I thought the scariest part was climbing the 90 ft ladder almost stright up to exit the cave. Keith

Thanks everyone for your responses. I'm really siked about the idea of repelling into the cave, especially now that I know all of you have had great experiences. Wish me luck!
