We hired a private driver/guide to show us around. Don’t remember how much it cost but at the time we felt it was worth every penny. We saw all major points of interest, received a running commentary about the island, its inhabitants and history and, best of all didn’t have to worry about directions and getting around.

I'd go for the HOHO. Waiheke roads are pretty narrow and in some parts not even sealed so you have to drive carefully.
If you want to drink alcohol it's the best choice. It's something new and locals are not pleased with it as the bus is too big for the roads. It covers a good selection of wineries and beaches.
Or the private driver (probably more than $50 however!)means you could customise your trip or a wine tour but they are about $150 per person.
