You can also do this online now. Go to www.eta.immi.gov.au/ and it expains what you need to do. You will need your passport number.

This is a very annoying issue from US end. Supposedly the visa is free and easy to get, so that USA doesn't have to respond by imposing visa req's on visiting Ozzies. But in fact getting that "ETA" can be very inconvenient.

For a while I think they had a free web application, but last I checked there was a large fee. You can still get it free from "agents" in theory but not necessarily in practice. Every visit I have new troubles with this system.

Nowdays folks buy air tix online with near zero live personnel support. With huge difficulty I find and talk some flunkie into digging up ETA paperwork, later to find it didn't "take" in the system. Tried calling Qantas several times and just got put on hold endlessly. Luckily at Qantas (partner) checkin, they could set it right.

The first time I went to Australia, Qantas did my visa for me. A year later I did an ETA online and it cost me $10 (can't remember if that was USD or AUD). I printed out a copy of it and stuck it in my passport. No one ever asked me for it or even asked if I had one (this was in Dec/Jan). BTW - it's good for a year.

I just returned from Sydney (to the US) last week. I used a United Airlines frequent flyer ticket and they did the visa by phone for free. They did it for free the previous two times as well. It would seem to me that even if you bought your ticket online, you could still call the airline and ask them to do the visa for you. I suggest you do so before paying for a visa.
