Two Weeks in Australia
We are going to Australia in mid-March. We cannot decide if we should do a Qantas package deal which would include 4 mights in Sydney, Cairns and Melbourne, or customize the trip. Where do you think we should go in the two weeks? For how long? And what should we see? Hope you can help us.

I would be inclined to not do the Qantas package, but internal flights in Australia are overpriced. If you're from the States , at least you get 2 $for 1. I live in Sydney and have travelled throughout Australia.
In two weeks it would bw hard to include a trip to Ayers Rock (Uluru) which is a pity.
I would fly to Sydney - and there is a lot of great stuff to do there. You wouldn't get bored if you spent 5 days there. If you're going to go to Cairns/ Port Douglas only go for ~3 days. The reef is absolutely extraordinary but I reckon the rest is crappy
Melbourne is another big city, but it does have a different feel to Sydney. If you're into casinos.horseracing or food, worth 3-4 days

Hi, I'm planning on a 7days holiday to Australia. From your recommendations, I think I will consider Sydney as my holiday spot! By the way, can you recommend any apartment in Sydney. We're going in a big family and thought would be good if we are able to rent an apartment. Also, what are the places of interest & what can we do in Sydney. Pls advice. Thanks!

Two weeks will be very rushed to do Sydney, Cairns and Melbourne but will give you a taste of Australia. I'd hire a car in Cairns and see Port Douglas, possible do a trip to the reef, drive to Kuranda and the Atherton tableland, do a trip to Cape Tribulation and the Daintree rainforest.
In Sydney and Melbourne don't worry about a car - use public transport or coach tours. In Sydney, wander around the Rocks area, do a coffee cruise on the harbout, take the ferry to Manly, see the Sydney aquarium, take the ferry across the harbour to Taronga Park Zoo, do a day trip to the Blue Mountains. In Melbourne, you could do a day trip to Healesville Sanctuary to see our native animals or just take a tram to Melbourne Zoo. Use the free City Circle tram to get around the CBD. Do a coach trip to the Yarra Valley wineries, or go to see the penguins at Philip Island. If you have time, the Great Ocean Road has scenery comparable to Big Sur. Lots of restaurants at Southbank. Visit Queen Victoria market for bargains. See our new museum. Have a great time wherever you go.

I just returned from about 10 days in Sydney- it was the greatest. I agree with everything in marg's message (above) but would add the BridgeClimb (harbour bridge- worth every cent) & Paddy's Market, which runs on the weekends and has a great mix of bargains. Have a wonderful time- you'll remember it always.

Spent 2 wks in Sydney about a month ago! We the pubs were great. Lord Nelson in the rocks was great... The bridge climb is definitely worth it. Went to Manly and Bondi, preferred Manly. If you are there more than a couple days buy the travel pass that allows you to use the ferries,buses and trains. For a wk it was $36AU. Taronga is nice and has great views of the city. Featherdale allows you to touch the koalas and feed the kangaroos. Don't forget, pictures, pictures, pictures! GREAT food, very COLD beer and the friendliest people!
