travel sickness

hey, i need help with travel sickness. We live in aus and like to travel. Problem is that I get extreme airsickness. Tried ginger, liquid and air tabs. We have now travelled to thailand 5 times, and the last trip I vomited for 8.5 hrs straight. So dehydrated that I was wheeled off in a wheel chair. Get all motion sickness...car - boat - swing and even the merry - go - round. Now I get so anxious because of the severe vomiting...please helppppppp

I can sympathise as I used to get very sick on anything that moved - planes, ships, cars, trains, you name it. I have found a few things that worked, the best being Dramamine which I buy in America when we visit (we live in Australia too) as you can't buy the same thing here. You can get a 4-6 hour Dramamine tablet or a long lasting 24 hour one which is fabulous for long haul flights. I'm not suggesting you travel to America just to get some, only that there is hopefully something out there that will work for you.

The only other thing I have tried which went off the market was a patch you put behind your ear, it was called Scop, or Transcop. I did hear you can get it on a script now - used to be over the counter - but am not really sure.

Before trying either of these, I was sick for the entire flight, vomiting a lot too, so I know how you feel. Now I can even enjoy a meal and rarely feel the slightest bit sick. So can I suggest you try and find something that works for you, even talk to your GP about a prescription .

Best of luck
Kay

Thanks Kay.. will go back to the gp. frustrated because they don't understand how bad I get. Not keen on the tabs that knock you out as if I sleep, makes me feel so much worse.. Will ask them for Dramamine....or similar..
cheers Ros

Help is here. My sister swears by these - she gets sea sick in a bath. I have used them too, with no ill effect - non drowsy etc. Although I usually only get queasy, rarely actually vomit.

There is a company on QLD call Bova Compounding. They make their own drugs. The one you want is scopolamine hbr chlorpheniramine. Just ask about the travel sickness tablets.

http://bovacompounding.com.au/
You will have to ring them an order some. Their website does not have a link to them. You can only buy them direct.

Hi Ros,
The Dramamine I take don't knock me out but do make me feel a bit dopey. I have a feeling the main ingredient in the Dramamine you can get in Australia is different from the one that I buy in America. This is what works for me : short acting Dramamine : Dimenhydrinate. Long acting Dramamine: Meclizine Hydrochloride.

I would look into Peter's suggestion above.

Good luck with it, it makes a HUGE difference not being ill for the whole flight. Also makes a big difference for your travel partner - just ask my husband

Kay

rmorgs - there are also compounding chemists in many areas of Australia. Maybe you can google and find someone local. They are all able to make their own drugs tailored to your needs.

I know there is one in Thornleigh (Woolworths centre) and another in Hamilton, Newcastle (Beaumont Street). Di

I have had similar (but not as strong) reactions to flying. It turned out to be related to altitude effects. I now take a prescription drug used to help people acclimate to higher elevations and it really works well. One pill the day before, one pill the day of the flight and somehow my blood is better able to handle less oxygen and no more upset or headache. The pill is relatively cheap in the US and is called Acetazolamide. remember that planes fly at 35,000 feet and only pressurize the cabin to an equivalent of 10,000 feet. So you are spending many hours in a lower oxygen environment. Worked for me.
