A guided tour will ensure you see all the tourist sights and sounds so thats not a bad thing.
On the other hand, hiring a car enables you to dictate the amount of time in each place and you can design your own journey, thats not a bad thing.
A bus pass is probably the most limiting as in time frames and destinations so give that one a miss.

I, personally, would opt for the rental car but then I like solitude and choice.

I hope the weather is good for you, it is the first day of spring today so hopefully you have timed it right.

Good luck.

11days isn't an awful lot of time, but a car is definitely the way to go. I visited NZ last November and travelled by bus for a few days on the North Island, I hired a car for the South Island and much preferred it for all the reasons outlined by Christa.

www.vistaphotos.com

Art:
I'm not sure that you can go wrong either way. We went in November 1999 for a month's arranged itinerary. We loved it so much we went back for a second time the next year for six weeks on our own. Loved it even more. You can rest assured that however you go, you won't go wrong. New Zealand is a marvelous country to visit.
John
