In Australia unlike the US, service tipping is not really necessary. But if you feel the need to tip a Porter etc $2.00 to $5.00 is sufficient. To be honest they really don't expect it, they consider it their to be their job and what they get paid for!

As the above have said. You don't tip in Australia, unless you get really exceptional service above and beyond what is expected in their job. Tipping is not expected at all, they are paid to do their job.

I agree with the above postings. Tipping is unnecessary in Australia, BUT, I do believe that a good job should be rewarded. Question is, what is a good job? I do believe that friendliness and a willingness to assist has to play a major part. Many people in the hospitality industry have no idea of the meaning of "hospitality". Those that do, should be rewarded for it. Have a fun time.

It is true tipping is not expected in Australia. If fact I have had Australians explain to me that tipping is degrading. To give someone a tip is to put them below you. I work in hospitalty/travel and hear this from Australian on a regular basis. However above it was mentioned that a good service job deserves a tip. Save your tips for service people in countries where they rely on it. Like North America. It is an obligation here!

No tipping in Australia, thank goodness; except occasionally in good restaurants. $2 to a train employee would be an insult (I think they would be ok with $100 though).
