We stayed at Oreti Village a couple of years back, in October.
It's a bit isolated, on the west side of Lake Taupo, but stunning, and very comfortable. We hated having to move on after 3 days.

I note that various hotel booking sites, such as wotif.com also are listing it now - so have a look for a good price.

Chas, if money is not a concern then the Huka Lodge is THE place to stay www.hukalodge.co.nz/.
We are looking forward to one night there - eventually - without the children !

Heathy,
My fiance and I are planning our honeymoon to Australia and NZ, and we are considering a few nights at the Huka Lodge. Is it worth the money? Also, with only 9 days in NZ, would you recommend staying in Taupo over other destinations?
Thanks!

Beckers, it depends on what you want to see and do. Most people recommend the South Island if you have a short amount of time.
We spent 10 days on the North Island in April 2004 - we won the trip and had to fly in and out of Auckland, so it made sense for us. You can pictures and a trip report at http://community.webshots.com/user/ElendilPickle
