Tasmania or Ayers Rock

We will be traveling thru Australia and NZ
this May. We have two additional days to visit either Ayers Rock or Tasmania.
If we wanted to do a wildlife tour in Tasmania to see platypus/devil, what part of Taz would we need to visit. Is either area "doable" in 2 days?

Also: Am looking at staying in Palm Cove area at Angansa Resort. Any reviews of the resort? Is Cod Hole area accessible from any of the snorkel/dive boats on day trip from PD?

Hi, Jackie!

While Tasmania is a tiny island compared to some, I really wouldn't recommend a trip as hasty as two days; by the time you did all your travelling from the airport and settling into your hotel, you'd be heading out again. I doubt if you would feel you'd been there at all.

Uluru (Ayers Rock) is, however, "doable" in a couple of days, because, after all, it's only a big rock, and what can you do with it after you have looked at it and walked around it? It's a bit like visiting Niagara Falls... after you've said "oooh" a few times, you're ready to move on. What's more, May is quite a pleasant time to visit the Australian outback, as the worst of the heat will have gone, and, hopefully, with it, the flies. So, although I don't often recommend Uluru to tourists, as it's a long way for a single feature (and expensive!), in your case I think it's the logical choice. What do other Fodor's regulars think?

Jackie:
Alan's logic is noteworthy. As a visitor to both places, Ayers Rock would be my choice for Alan's reasons.
Pity you don't have more time, Tasmania is enchantingly beautiful.
In any event, Australia is a lovely place to visit.
John
Jackie,

Although I think Ayers Rock is quite impressive, I only visited there because I was doing a RTW ticket that allowed me an extra stop in Australia. I don't know if I had gone there if I had to pay any extra money. Don't get me wrong, it is really nice but it is a long, long way to get there. What about using the 2 extra days in some of your current destinations of your itinerary?

Good luck,

McH

I would really second McH's advice. I have been to both Ayers Rock (Uluru) and to Tasmania - there is nothing wrong with either place - If I had a choice and were going to be at the GBR then I would add a day there and perhaps an extra day in Sydney. Save all that extra travel time and enjoy two really fantastic, superb places. And if I would choose one of these it would be Sydney. It would take a lot for me to get tired of this marvelous city. Consider McH's and my advice.
