Sydney - What to do with our luggage for a few hours
Good morning,
Hope you can help me. We are two couples arriving on the Oriana on November 4 in the morning and leaving to fly back to Perth at 3.15pm and would like to spend the time we have wandering around the Rocks, Opera House area but without dragging around our luggage.
I have contacted the YHA in the Rocks to see if they will allow us to pay a fee to hold our bags but they cannot/will not do so unless you are staying there. I have also found a place called Travellerspoint in George Street that has luggage storage but feel by the time we get there, back to the Rocks then back to pick it up, then get to the station, it seems like a lot of mucking around. I rang the Transport Info help line to see if there is luggage storage at the station at Circular Quay but gave up on the automated phone service. All my google attempts seem to tell me it no longer exists.
Anyone have any brilliant ideas? Or if we have to keep our luggage with us, how do you suggest we fill in our time? Many thanks.

Hi Maudie,
I've made a couple of calls and it seems your best bet is the one at Dymocks in George street. It will be less than 10 mins in a taxi from Circular Quay. If you don't have too much luggage, you could take a bus from Circular Quay. Dymocks is on the LHS, about midway between King & Market streets.
Outbound, just get a cab from Dymocks to the airport. Quicker, less fussing about - especially as it seems as if you don't have all that much time.
There used to be lockers at Circular Quay, but everyone got spooked about security & they're gone now, unfortunately.

Hi Bokhara2,
That's so kind of you! Thanks very much for taking the time to make the calls.
What you said makes sense and its good to know that its only about 10 mins in a taxi. Also good suggestion with the taxi to the airport. We had thought it would all work out just fine if we could have left our luggage at Circular Quay, had a nice walk around and some lunch then trained to the airport - oh well but plan B sounds just fine.
Shame about the lockers though, seems like it is happening all over the world.
I do appreciate your effort so thanks again.

I don't know Sydney. But for any city:-
Are there lockers at the railway or bus depot?
Are there hotels you can rent by the hour/halfday. (Not the naughty ones).
Rent the cheapest room you can find. Leave the luggage there. Walk around. Come back freshen up and check out.
You won't have much time, so skip the cafes.

The discovery museum is good. You can get a good overview. The videos are very long (20-30min) so skip them too. Then go for a walk.

Susannh place was closed when we went but sound fascinating and will be on top of the list next time.
There are guided walks too. These pages will tell you.
Tit for tat. What should I see in Perth in early September. We are in Mandurah for a week, then touring for week. I'll put this on a another thread as well.

Hi again Bokhara, we are actually from Perth and picked up a great last minute cruise deal from San Francisco to Sydney. Really looking forward to it, the only other boat trip we have done is the Norwegian Coastal Voyage so this will be quite different. But thanks for you warm wishes and the info might help someone else.
Hi Peter, I did think of asking the YHA hostel if we could rent a room for the day. Might be worth a call, they can only say no.
Thanks also for the Discovery Museum, that might just work for us. I will have a good look at the site.
I'll answer your other thread to save it getting lost here.
Thanks again.

The thing is are you only renting the room to store your luggage at? I sure hope not. As for the looker problem, I agree that many are disappearing as times change and people feel less and less secure about public storage that they just lock with a simple lock. I think Bokhara2's idea is the best one you've heard and I think I will use it next time I'm traveling through.
