Hi, luvvacations!
The weather in Sydney in the first week of October will be bloody fantastic.... you could not have chosen better. The days will be warm and clear, the nights just a bit crisp. There will be people swimming in the beaches by that time, but the water temperature might still be a bit low for this to be truly enjoyable... the main swimming season at Sydney beaches is from early November.
Dance spots? Over to you, Neil and John!

Sounds more like your scene, Alan - you're the city slicker, I'm just the country cousin.
Girls, better to check www.lonelyplanet.com, the Thorntree forum for Sydney.

September in Sydney is absolutely sublime, being the first month of Spring. October is almost as good! Sydney has a great nightlife. And you can easily club-hop your way around town. King Street Wharf has some great places as does Kings Cross. A good place to look is www.sydney.citysearch.com.au
You can search for the type of place you want - dance, live music etc and the region - go for "inner city". Swimming - sept/oct often throws up some fantastic swimming weather with it then turning colder in Nov, so you could be in luck!
