Sydney itinerary help, please
Hey everyone, I'm headed to Australia for about two weeks in late July/August, and -- not counting the day I arrive -- will spend four days in Sydney. I am a single guy, 31 years old, traveling alone and will be staying in Darling Harbor. I'll definitely want to go out to the bars at night, and will want to see all the museums, attractions, etc. Food-wise, I'm looking for good but not terribly expensive places to eat. So with all that in mind, could you please suggest itineraries for me?

Hi, andrews98682!
I would say that Chinatown is beckoning... coming from Darling Harbour into the city you will pass through Chinatown (or very near it), and quite half the businesses there will be trying to take your money from you by offering you a meal... from an expensive fill-your-plate-for-$6 booth below street level to some of the most sumptuous Asian eateries in the city. You're bound to find something in your price range. Otherwise, to save money and still eat well, try the "clubs".... a bit hard to describe to a non-Sydneysider, but they are something like all-purpose function/entertainment centres whose main income is from poker machines. Their dining areas are family affairs, however, and the food is often very good value, since they don't need to make a profit out of Mum and the kids when Dad is down the hall feeding his week's salary into the pokie. We ate in one such establishment this evening -- an RSL Club, which, I find, are usually better value than anywhere else (and they are all over Sydney's suburbs), and six of us dined extremely well (I confess to visiting the sweets bar four times) for a total of $AUD69 (slightly less than $US50). Had we been members, it would have been only about two-thirds of that. You can see that this is definitely the way to go if you want to save money in Sydney... you'd eat so much in your one twelve-dollar sitting that you wouldn't have to eat another full meal until the next night.

We've just returned from Sydney staying at the newly revamped Sofitel Wentworth. We found a great bar called Cruise in the overseas passenger terminal at Circular Quay on the left looking at the harbour. Lots of youngies eating & drinking & the view was fab-looking directly at the Opera house! The city really is great on Thurs & Friday nights with lots happening down at the Quay. City Extra is a cheap place down there to eat and alway packed full of people! Also lots of places like Centrepoint have big lunch boxes discounted at 2pm. Eat up at lunch and snack or carpet picnic for dinner. Booze is pretty cheap at many bars-around US3-4 for a beer.
