Sydney - how's area around Queen Victoria Bldg?

We've located an apartment while we stay in Sydney for four days that's across the street from the Queen Victoria Building. Would you recommend that neighborhood? It's our first time in Sydney.

Hi - there is absolutely nothing wrong with this neighbourhood at all being, as it is, right in the middle of the retail district of the CBD. You have easy access from here to the train (Town Hall Station), buses, monorail and light rail. You would be a short walk from restaurants in Darling Harbour or Chinatown (Haymarket), and about a 20 min walk to The Rocks, Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Botanical Gardens etc. Of course, being right in the middle of the retail district you have great shopping at the QVB, Galleries Victoria, Pitt Street, Castlereagh St (for designer shops and jewellers), and Paddy's Markets at Haymarket.

Probably the only downside of all this is that this area is very busy day and night obviously so if you were looking for a quiet spot you would do better to look further afield.

Great. Thanks to both of you. There's another studio apartment on Hyde Park on Oxford, but looks like Queen Victoria Building area is sooo convenient to transportation, etc.

Hi:
You're right, QVB is closer to Circular Quay, Opera House, etc. but depending on your plans you may enjoy being on the other side of Hyde Park, nearer to Oxford St. and Kings Cross-

pshamrock, I don't think you could have chosen much better.... not only is the QVB near to most of the things you want to see, but it's also right at a major subway (Town Hall) and the main bus routes, so anything you want to see that isn't at hand is easily accessible.

Your other alternative is only six minutes walk from the QVB anyway, so don't be too stressed deciding... Sydney is a small, compact city (it's only the dormitory suburbs that go on forever)and you will never be more than a few minutes' walk from something you want to see.
