Quayside Cottages near Hobart?

Hi folks
We're trying to decide on where to stay in Hobart area, and one promising option (at least based on the website) is the Quayside Cottages in Bellerive.
http://www.quaysidecottages.com.au/

To my surprise, they don't show up in TripAdvisor. We're also considering Bellerive House B&B, which gets rave reviews. However, the cottages have a very tempting rate, and look to be in a good location.

Does anyone know about the cottages, or have any experience/comments? We could go either way -- self catering or B&B. Thanks as always!

Hi SB_travlr -

I can't help with your question, but I just wanted to note that the lack of reviews on TA could be due to their posting guidelines.

I've tried posting reviews for privately owned cottages on TA before, but they've been rejected as they don't accept reviews for this type of accommodation. I don't know if this is still the case...and I've never understood the reasoning behind it...as they accept reviews for B&Bs, which are privately owned!

Just yesterday I sent two requests to TA to add a couple of B&Bs that I recently stayed at and want to write reviews for. We'll see what they say.

Hi Melnq, Trip Advisor does have a new segment for holiday rental properties - maybe it hasn't been going long enough for many reviews. Its in partnership with Flipkey, I wrote a review of a holiday rental in Turkey recently and it did appear.

Bellerive is not a great location for visiting Hobart. Its across the river and you may as well be out in the countryside because the wharf area is where everything is at. If you want a convenient place and an apt Hotel with all facilities in your unit i.e.kitchen and laundry then you cannot go past The Old Woolstore which is 1 block from the wharves or somewhere in Salamanca which also has apartments for rental. If you want B&B then check out the ones in Sandy Bay. Check those on www.wotif.com.au Also not everything is on Trip Advisor and I have tried to do reviews on places a number of times which have never been printed for some reason known only to TA. Its not been a BIG thing in Australia for that long so some places will have missed out, either because they don't fit the TA criteria or for the reason that I mentioned of missing out.

I just looked up the cottages myself in Bellerive and they do look nice but also checked out wotif under Hobart and they have some rather good deals going in the apartments which are really well located - the Old Woolstore, Salamanca Apartments ( I think thats right ) and Number One Davey - those 3 places were all about $120AU per night but I cannot remember if you have said how many there are in your party.

Thanks for the info, everyone! Sometimes TripAdvisor is helpful, and sometimes not so much -- usually have to do some reading between the lines!

ivenotbeen, I'll try wotif -- I thought we were too far out to find anything for November, but it's worth a shot. (There's just two of us: Mr SB and me), so a 1-bedroom is fine.

I did look on TA to see what was said about The Woolstore and was surprised to find some derogatory comments. I have stayed there myself and I was very pleased with the apartment which had a lounge/dining room, equiped kitchen, Laundry, good sized bedroom with TV as well as TV in the Lounge. They don't have all the trimmings such as swimming pools, gyms and business centres like the big hotels but its well located and you can walk to everthing. Anyway keep a watch on wotif and grab a bargain when they come up. I too am in the hospitality industry and I am sometimes a bit tardy in getting my 3 months specials out but I do get around to it. November should not be a too busy time as its before Xmas which means that not too many people are holidaying at that time so you will not have a problem unless there is something I have overlooked happening in November. The very best accommodation around there are the apartment on the Elizabeth Street Pier. I will check those and see if I can remember the name - fantastic stop over the water.

I meant to say "fantastic spot" not stop over the water - they are Somerset on the Pier - here is the wotif blurb:
(An award-winning transformation of the early 1930s pier building, Somerset on the Pier integrates the exterior of the historic waterfront landmark with clean, striking modern architecture. Somerset on the Pier is conveniently located just a few minutes walk from Salamanca Place, Battery Point, Cruise centres, the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Constitution Dock, Sullivan’s Cove, Hobart’s central business district and its finest restaurants and cafés.

These spacious serviced residences offer 56 non-smoking rooms for both the individual and families. Each apartment features unrivalled panoramic water views of the River Derwent, Hobart’s waterfront and historic Sullivan’s Cove. Featuring spacious loft style apartments with contemporary décor, Somerset on the Pier offers a welcome alternative to a hotel and is ideal corporate housing for the executive and international family for a short holiday or extended stay).
The other ones that I suggested are Salamanca Terraces and One Davey together with the Woolstore. For a normal hotel the Grand Chancellor overlooks the wharf area but you have to ask for a waterview room otherwise you may get a city view. There's all the eateries that you need down there and its the top spot to be. Hope this helps.

As soon as I read your post I thought of Somerset on the Pier. We stayed there a few years back - very good rooms, great outlook over the marina and quay with something happening all the time, and close to Salamanca Markets, cafes and the downtown area.
