Pubs/Inns from Sydney to Brisbane?
I'm spending 3 weeks in AU and the 2nd stretch of the trip we are driving (over a 4 day period) from Sydney to Brisbane. We read that there are Pubs/Inns along the way which would have decent overnight accomodations. Does anyone know if they are easy to find along that route? We are not much into fancy hotels, as we like to learn about the people and do the "native" things. Can anyone just "drop-in" without reservations or is it risky?

We are also taking a plane ride from Brisbane to Cairns, but from everyone's emails, Port Douglas seems like a better choice (we are diving and going to Kuranda). From there we are going to Ayers Rock.

I'm confused, help!
No info on the pubs/inns but I would definitely recommend Port Douglas over Cairns. Both nice, but for diving and "quiet leisure" Port Douglas is the one to do, especially for the better more remote dive sites. Have a great trip!

Alan

By the way, if you decide to stay in Port Douglas, there is a restaurant I can recommend. It's a little on the pricey side (not too bad) but has great food in a unique quiet atmosphere It's called Going Bananas, I had a really good dinner there. The owner looks like Gerard Depardeau and walks around in a silk kimono, hilarious!

trip from Sydney to Brisbane - I would recommend the coast road for beautiful coast line - there are plenty of motels or backpackers accommodation along the coast at reasonable rates. Only drawback is more traffic on coast road and lots of roadworks. Inland is less traffic and lovely scenery but nothing to compare with the gorgeous coastline. I live on the coast about halfway between Sydney & Brisbane - so am biased!!!!
Hope you enjoy your trip
