Potts Point
Hi,
Has anyone stayed at the Holiday Inn-Potts Point or know of it's neighborhood? It looks great online, convenient to public transportation but am wondering how close it is to the Kings Cross district. Not too interested in a red light district while staying a week in Sydney.
thank you!

Potts Point is a nice area. It's close to the CBD and Kings Cross.
Check out maps.google.com and match up with some of the areas in this Where to stay in Sydney article: http://www.999reasons.com/content/blogcategory/22/54/

There are some positive recent reviews for the Holiday Inn on Trip Advisor. We stayed there some years ago and the hotel itself is fine however, you are in Kings Cross and the streets around the hotel are less than pleasant.
The entrance to the Railway which is very closeby is always (to my mind) pretty sordid and especially if you are a lone female. There are a lot of homeless people plus an active drug trade most hours of the day.
Further away from the Hotel there are some nice restaurants etc. but personally I think you could do better, especially for a week.
By the way calling it the Potts Point Holiday Inn is really a euphanism as it is much closer to the centre of Kings Cross than Potts Point.

Hi LABruin,
It's smack in the middle of Kings Cross. There's a map attached to this; if it doesn't come up, just click on it.

It probably wouldn't be my pick, because of the location (I'm a Sydney resident), although some interstate colleagues have stayed there & found it perfectly fine.

Leave aside the angst about the Cross. It is cleaner than most parts of most cities . It is in a great spot to get everywhere eg catch the train from the airport to central and then change and get off at Kings Cross. Lots of cafes , walk down Victoria St to the stairs to Wool...oo and up to the State Gallery ,Botanical Gardens , Opera House - lovely spots to eat in Macleay Street . And I am from Melbourne . Get a city / harbour view room as it is a great outlook

Hi again LABruin,
JohnFitz is probably right - you know how we're mostly hypercritical of our own backyards!
To be fair, my cousin lives in Macleay street, has done for 20+ years & loves it. Victoria Street's absolutely gorgeous and there are lots of great restaurants & bistros in Kings Cross ("the Cross" to locals), Darlinghurst etc.
So, don't be put off by my sour view (LOL). Depending on your mindset, it can be cosmopolitan & interesting. I always enjoy my visits there - just being a bit "overprotective" of visitors, I guess.

LABruin at the risk of being impertinent can I make a suggestion out of left field ? Have you considered a small boutique hotel ? There a are a number in Sydney and 1 in Potts Point I know well . I have stayed there but not for a little while. I know the owners but I would not recommend it if I was not sure about it .I did call in to the hotel recently It is in Challis Ave just off Victoria St and is called Simpsons. It does a continental - nice - breakfast and you eat out otherwise.Lovely antiques etc ,nice rooms with ensuites .They get a lot of overseas guests and repeat visitors so they must be doing something right .It is in a National Trust property and near all those cafes etc .So in tha tarea you are far enough away from the red light area and within walking distance to lots of good things .Rates are around $A 200 a night I think but less if available on wotif.see simsonshotel.com There are a number of hotels in Macleay St.which is a good spot to be as it is more lively than in the downtown area where many luxe hotels are located .There is also the Russell in the Rocks and The Hughenden in Queen St Woollahra (very upmarket part of Sydney close to everything ).I know someone who stayed there recently and was happy although the room was small but got at a good price off wotif . Look at wotif.com or hotels .com.au they all appear on it . I suppose it really depends on what you are after . Were you offered other properties ? Good luck .

Another hotel in the area is Regent's Court. It has great rooms and a roof garden. It is in a cul de sac so quiet but very close to Victoria rd and Kings Cross Station.

Hi John,
Thanks for the suggestion. The Simpsons is a bit more than I wanted to pay per night. Trying to find something <US$120/night which I may have found on the B&B website thanks to you. I have a quote from The Victoria Court which looks to be truly located in Potts Pt. Any insight into this establishment?

LABruin-
I stayed at the Russell (www.therussell.com.au) a few months ago and cannot recommend it more highly.
I had a superior room that shared a bath with MAYBE one or two other rooms. But it was just outside our room door and was always spotless.
They have a superior room for AU$195 = about US$155 or a standard room for AU$140 = US$110.
Perfect location - across the street from the Opera House, a block away from the Harbour Bridge and very close to public transport as well. The rates also include a massive breakfast.
For what it's worth, here are some of other suggestions for Sydney - http://fodors.com/forums/threadselec...3&tid=34979153
