Perth is at is best in September and one thing you should plan to do is a tour of the wild flowers - nowhere in the world has a more diverse and outstanding show of wildflowers than West Australia.
Take a trip down to the Margaret River area and visit the wineries - ride the puffing billy at Harvey - take a trip down to the south western forests and see some of the world's olders trees and beautiful areas of forests. Take a trip around Freemantle - the port - and wander around the coffee shops and cafe's there. Do a Swan River wine cruise.
Whatever you do it will be lovely at that time of year. If you just want somewhere close to wander about for lunch then just go to Kings Park and watch the world go by.

I agree with liz you have to go to fremantle do the wine tours go to Kings Park definately go to magaret river and even Pemberton. If you do make it to magaret river go to the chocolate factory!!! If you want a something to do at night time I am the expert!! It depends if you are into the whole clubbing scene, but the best club to go to is Rise in northbridge (James street) especially on a friday night or a Saturday night the restaurants in northbridge are pretty nice as well, but again it depends on your budget and taste (in music and food !!)If you are into museums and things like that go to the art gallery and museums in Perth and the best "arty" films are usually played in the Leederville area. All these areas are fully accessible by trains. Do Not miss the zoo!!

If you want to do something different, visit New Norcia - an old Benedictine monastary/schools/churches about an hour's drive north of Perth. The Pinnacles at Nambung National Park (about 2 1/2 hours drive north of Perth) are worth seeing. For wildflowers, the Kalbarri National Park (about 600 km north of Perth) is absolutely spectacular for both scenery and flowers. We were there a few years ago and the wildflowers were absolutely incredible.
In fact, if you have two or three days to spare, you could do all these three things, and have a look at Geraldton and York along the way.
