Can anyone tell me, if I fall in love with a NZ wine, can I bring some back to the US?

jasperti, thanks for your great post with details of your NZ holiday. My family is going to NZ next Feb for 3 weeks(fly in to Christch & out from Auckl) so I'm delighted to read of your experiences before we go.

Yes, but...

The duty free limit is one liter per adult aged 21 or over.

Beyond that -

"Federal regulations allow you to bring back more than one liter of alcoholic beverage for personal use, but, as with extra tobacco, you will have to pay duty and Internal Revenue Service tax."

I brought back a 6-bottle pack which was my second piece of luggage and declared it no one from customs blinked. Just remember you have to pack it, bring some bubble wrap.

In exchange for the zinfandel I request a Siefried Pinot Gris..straight from the New World grocery & often on sale. A great quaffer.

Your NZ trip sounds wonderful. We lived there for a year in a place that is off the beaten track but well worth the visit. It is Dunedin on the South Island. Very far south which is why many folks don't visit. The views are spectacular and it is the sister city of Edinborough, Scotland so has a definite Scottish flavor. There is an albatross colony there on the peninsula that is worth seeing as well as penguins and sea lions. Dunedin has Otaga University and many historical sites. I'd recommend it highly.
