Nice place for one night between Sydney and Bateman's Bay?
We are flying in to Sydney late in the afternoon, and will drive down to Bateman's Bay in the morning to visit a friend. We are from Southern California on our first trip to Australia, is there a pleasant spot to spend one night that's no more than an hour south of Sydney? All we will want is a nice little pub for dinner and a pretty spot.

Hi gigib
Kiama is on the coast, about an hour and a half drive south from the airport. That would leave you with around a two & a half hour drive the next day to Bateman's Bay.
There are plenty of options at Kiama for accommodation and meals - in the summer months it can be very crowded, but not at other times. If you take a look at local websites like stays.com.au you'll find a great variety of options.
Perhaps someone who lives locally will be able to give you some pub suggestions. Di

One hour south lands you in Wollongong. The beaches are quite nice there. Stayed in the Medina that was good. An extra half and you are in Kiama that is very beautiful and has 2 blowholes. The 'Little' Blowhole is spectacular, as you are very near where the water sprouts upwards. Bit hard to find but it is signposted. Little bit further is Gerringong where we recently stayed at Mercure. Room 201 has the best view.

I would go for Kiama (pretty and the blowhole is spectacular), or alternatively, Gerringong, Gerroa, or Berry. Gerringong and Gerroa, next to each other, are on the sea, Berry is 7km inland but a pretty little township, nestled just next to the mountains where there is the remnants of ancient sub-tropical rainforest.
Much further south, you might think of stopping off in Mollymook (near beach) or Milton (rural setting). Cute but probably too close to Bateman's Bay to warrant stopping there overnight.

Another idea would be to head SW from Sydney to one of the quaint towns on the Southern Highlands (Berrima, perhaps) and stay at a B&B there. In the AM, look around the highlands a bit, then head down to the coast, via Kangaroo Valley and Berry, to Nowra. From Nowra, go south along the Princes Hwy to Bateman's. I like this idea because it allows you do a loop, not backtracking all the way back to Sydney - you could still see Kiama and other lovely places closer to Sydney, but that would be on the return.
