My husband and I did the Rob Roy Glacier track last year in November and it was fantastic. You drive (or get a shuttle)for an hour or so, crossing quite a few fords on the way, to Raspberry Creek which has a car park and facilities. Then you walk, crossing a swing bridge and head off towards the glacier. The track was washed out at various places which was a bit hairy, but it was a fairly easy walk and when you start to glimpse the glacier it was awesome. You would need to allow at least half a day to do the whole walk - we had to head back about three quarters of the way up the track as we had dinner reservations (Missy's Kitchen in Wanaka is terrific!) Also, I can recommend a B&B in Kaikoura - Endeavour Heights is beautiful, and the views of the mountains are spectacular!

Deedle,

Curious if you did the Tongariro Crossing. We are headed to NZ in a month and plan on trying it. Sounds beautiful, and I'm curious how hard the climb is. Sounds like there's only one to be concerned with.
