Milford Sound

Hi - we want to do a coach-cruise-fly from Queenstown. Is it worthwhile to do this at the end of August? I see two companies - Real Journeys and Red Boat with very different pricing. Are both same? Any other recommendations?

Thanks.

We will also be there in Aug. I hope you receive a reply as we would be interested too.

I don't think you would have any problems doing Milford Sound at the end of August. If it is the temperature you are concerned about, just dress in layers including a fleece and waterproof jacket. Milford Sound has a lot of rain year round, and many people have said that the rain actually enhanced their experience as the waterfalls were even more spectacular. I was in Milford Sound a few years ago and think what you plan to do is the best option. Our travel agent failed to mention that we could fly back to Queenstown and so we took the coach both ways. It was a very long day and it would have been great to enjoy a flight over Milford Sound and then be able to spend the rest of the day in Queenstown. By the way, the company we went with was Real Journeys.

Hi RP,

I second the vote for Real Journey's.

I've been putting my clients on them for years and they do a very good job.

Have a great time!

We drove to Milford from Te Anu, where we were staying. We had the pick of 3 or 4 boat operators. Most go to about the same place, with only minor differences in prices. For your coach-boat-fly trip from Queenstown, I can vouch for Real Journeys, don't know about Red Boat, though have heard good things. If weather precludes the fly part, you will have a long, but oh so rewarding day. Real Journeys has an office in Q'town adjacent to the steamship dock. We used them for our overnight on Doubtful, and I cannot think of a tour company that I have had a more pleasant experience with. They were all friendly, helpful and how can they be so happy all the time.
As far as the weather, we were there in March. It rains about 600 inches per year in fjordland, so it is likely to rain, has just rained, or is about to rain when you are there. Dress accordingly and you will enjoy. There are only two year round waterfalls, so when it is raining, the waterfalls are everywhere. The mist shrouds the mountains, and you may even get a dusting of snow higher up. Can be one of the most gorgeous and beautiful things you have ever experienced. Go for it. It's great. If you get a beautiful blue sky day, bless you. But rainy days are good too.
