We drove it in four days stopping at Apollo Bay, Port Fairy and Robe then on to Adelaide. It certainly depends on how long you want to spend at some of the sights but I can tell you it was one of the highlights of our trip. The second day seemed to take us the longest to get anywhere because there's so much neat stuff to see and the drive is incredible. I wouldn't say it was easy but it wasn't hard either - let us say challenging but very worthwhile. Hope this helps.

If you want distances and an estimate of driving time - try www.travelmate.com.au
the Map Maker section, key in Melbourne and Adelaide and it will give you the info.
Scenery would be lovely, lots to do, it depends a bit on what you like.

Are you sure you want to do a return trip? It's a 10 hour return trip.

We rented a car in Melbourne, dropped it off in Adelaide ($45 a day with no drop off charge) and flew back.

Air fares in Auastralia are very reasonable - it cost $90 each (with a Qantas internet deal) to fly back to Melbourne. Considering it is a 10 hour drive, the flight for 2 was cheaper than the car rental, gas, and hotel cost for 2 nights that you would incur if you drove back.

If you do drive back to Melbourne, consider driving the Great Ocean Road one way and visiting the Grampians National Park and Ballarat on the way back.

we just drove it from adelaide to melbourne - stopped overnight in robe - for me, it was ok...i would say most of the drive is away from the ocean - other than the stretch around the 12 apostle's - my wife liked it more than me - i think the california/oregon hwy 1 is more dramatic - just my opinion
