Hi there
Depending upon what time your flight arrives into Fiji you may have to stay on the mainland for a night. (If you do the Tanoa is as good as any airport hotel and they do transfers)
The ferry leaves from Denerau marina and goes out round the island resorts dropping off and picking people up. It is a pleasant trip and gives you a good "lay of the land" or sea as the case may be.
Malolo itself seems OK. I have only been there twice as a visitor, not actually stayed in the resort. It has a nice pool which is good for kids, good bar facilities. The beach is a bit average insofar as it is not exactly an expanse of white sand, more raked coral sand. The water is very clear off the beach. You can snorkel straight off the beach but there is not a huge amount of sealife there. Better to take a trip out to a nearby reef to snorkel.
In talking to people who were staying there, it pays to get a printout out of your room account and go through it for accuracy. There appeared to be errors in the accounts of people I was talking to. Easily resolved though.
For a short stay I am sure it would be fine, though for logistics sake, have you checked out the resorts at Denerau. The beach is nothing, but the pools there are great and the hotels very nice.
Enjoy your stay whatever you choose.
