Luggage Requirements - Qantas

WE're looking forward to our trip to Australia in a few weeks. We're flying Q to Australia from LA and then have flights from Melbourne to Adelaide to Cairns to Sydney before we return home. I'm a bit confused about luggage limits - # of bags to check as well as size, weight, and carryon. It looks like there are different rules for internat'l vs within Oz and we don't want to get stuck. Any hints?

Hi Anne,

I have found that the domestic flights are really cracking down on carry on bags and are really making people stick to size limits. Below is Qantas luggage allowances:

International:

Checked Baggage. The free baggage allowance is based on weight or number of pieces, depending on your route. Under the piece system, the two pieces of baggage are subject to size restrictions and a maximum weight per bag of 32kg (70lbs). Qantas or your travel agent has further details on baggage entitlements.

Economy Class Busine Class First Class
Weight
20 kg(44lbs) 30kg(66lbs) 40 kg(88lbs)

OR Pieces
2 2 2

Cabin Baggage. International allowances vary by class. Economy Class passenger are allowed 1 cabin bag, weighing 5 kg (11 lbs) or less, with maximum linear measurements (the sum of the length, breadth and depth) of 100 cm (39 inches). Business and First Class passengers are allowed 2 cabin bags with maximum linear measurements of 115 cm (45 inches) and the total weight of both pieces no more than 7 kg (15 lbs).

Additional allowances are available for Gold, Silver and Blue Frequent Flyers and Qantas Club members.

Domestic
Checked Baggage. The free allowance for registered baggage is 3 bags for Business Class ticket holders and 1 bag for passengers travelling in Economy Class. The total linear dimension of each piece should not exceed 140 cm (54 inches) or weigh more than 32 kg (70 lbs).

Cabin Baggage. In both classes 2 cabin bags are allowed per person, each with a maximum linear dimension of 105 cm (41 inches). The total weight of all bags should not exceed 4 kg (9 lbs).

Again, if you are a Gold, Silver or Blue Frequent Flyer or a Qantas Club member, additional allowances are available.

A Final Note On Baggage
For both international and domestic travel no single item of baggage should exceed 32 kg (70 lbs) in weight

Hope this helps.

I believe that if your tickets combine international and domestic legs, the international allowance will apply throughout.

Tangata is right. I just returned from a trip to Oz which involved international and domestic flights. Whatever your allowance is for international, will be the same for domestic-given you can show them an international ticket. In other words, the international allowance with override the domestic.

KC

Thanks for your replies. I guess if we get onto our plane in the states with our luggage, we should be ok from stop to stop within Australia (unless I do too much shopping along the way!)

Anne,
Just be aware that regardless of the allowances none of the local domestic airlines will allow carry on bags that are too big or too many - what gets carried onboard a domestic airliner in the US would never get onboard down here - they will still carry it but in the hold. Good luck.

Just a warning they really stand by the weight limits for Quantas. I've heard that they will leave your luggage sit on the tarmac if it's over the 70#.... I bought a duffle bag in Sydney, largest possible, to bring back all the gifts! The shopping is outstanding!

The only problem we had with Qantas (International and Domestic) and our baggage during three weeks in Australia, was with carry-on pieces on domestic flights. We had to check our small roll-aboards on the jetway between Adelaide and Cairns. We were given very nice small carry-on bags by the airline to load with our valuables, cameras, etc. before handing over our roll-aboards. Just a small inconvenience.
