Kangaroo Island

My husband and I are working on an itinerary for AU and NZ. We plan to spend a couple of days in Adelaide. Is a day-trip to Kangaroo Island feasible or should we plan to stay overnight on the island?

A day trip would be OK if that's all the time you have to spare. You could fly from Adelaide and be on the island at around 7:30am, and take the last flight back. Would be rushed, but if you had a good tour guide, you'd at least see some of the highlights.

Note that K.I. is larger than you might imagine, so you wouldn't be able to hit all of the major sites in 1 day.

On our first visit to Adelaide, we only had time for a day trip to KI, but we had a wonderful experience! (Flying both ways with a tour bus on the island.) We saw the sea lions at Seal Bay, walked on the sand dunes, toured a cave, had a BBQ lunch, walked around the Remarkable Rocks, and visited Flinders Chase National Park. We saw a lot, but never felt like we were being rushed. We returned several years later for a 2-night stay there and loved it, but if you only have a day--go for the day trip!

I took the www.waywardbus.com.au tour of Kangaroo Island for two days. I was picked up at a central location in Adelaide, bused to the ferry, and met the driver once I got off the ferry on Kangaroo Island. He showed us everything on the island. We spent one night on the island and the second afternoon went back to Adelaide.

My family (three boys -- 17, 14 and 10) will be in Sydney, Alice Springs/Uluru, Port Douglas and Melbourne in August. Is KI worth making a special trip or is it just a great thing to do if you are going to be in the Adelaide area anyway (we will not be, unless we make a special trip to KI)?

Europewithkids--Depends on how much you and your kids like wildlife. KI is one of the best places to Australia to see all sorts of animals in the wild, some of which can't be seen anywhere else! We've been to Sydney, Melbourne, GBR and Perth but I have to say the our experience visiting KI was one of the best in Australia.

Hi Janeous

I would definately agree - KI is great for wildlife, esp if you go camping. Wonderful place. I think you need to stay overnight.
