Kaitaia (North Island) restaurant

My husband and I spent a night at Kaitaia last fall and were delighted to discover a wonderful restaurant just off the main street one rainy night. The name is "Bushmans Hut". We had one of the best meals of our two-week trip to NZ (North, South and Stewart Islands). The actual address is "7 Bank Street) and the owners are Bobb and Jill Coates.

Jane,
Would you recommend a place to stay in Kaitaia?? We are thinking of spending one nite there in December & taking a bus tour to Cape Reinga.

We stayed at a Motel on the main street but I cannot remember the name. It was o.k. for the night. I think that mail street had quite a few motels and we just chose one. We had a Lonely Planet so I might have chosen the motel from their recommendations. I like the LP because they give recommendations for obscure places--and Kaitaia is certainly obscure! We got up enough nerve to brave the left-side driving and rented a car in Auckland for the trip to Cape Reinga.

Jane,
Would you recommend a place to stay in Kaitaia for one night? We are a family of 4 from Canada interested in spending one evening in Kaitaia in December, prior to taking a tour to Cape Reinga.

I think we stayed at the "Wayfarer Motel" located at 231 Commerce (the main street through Kaitaia) Going north, it is on the right side, left side going south. We had a bedroom, sitting room (with two single beds) and a kitchenette--although there were only 2 of us. My 1978 Lonely Planet lists the price at $78 NZ. We really enjoyed the drive up to Cape Rainier and back. We were there in November of last year. Have a great time. We're going to your Canadian rockies this fall!
