Is Port O'Call in Port Douglas good value?

We are trying to find a nice place to stay for 5 nights in Port Douglas. There is so much on offer and it all looks rather nice so we need some advice. One cheap option seems to be the Port O'Call hostel but we'd like to hear from someone who's stayed there.
Would you recommend it or is it only suitable for very budget minded travellers who does not care about comfort? What is the location like? What type of travellers stay there. Is is a mix or only backpackers?
We have also look at Martinique and Hibiscus Gardens and they look lovely but are more expensive. Is it worth the extra money?

We've stayed at Hibiscus gardens and it was excellent. The main attraction is that its very convenient to the town, beach, marina, etc. Port O'Call is a long walk out of the town proper, I believe.

Helen,
Port O'Call would be about 10-15 min walk into town along a quiet street. They have a cheap restaurant next door that seems popular.
As an alternative, we just stayed at the Port Douglas Queenslander which are 3 and a half star apartments and would be about midway in price between the hostel and the other places you mention. Also the Outrigger is about 2 doors down from the Queenslander(slightly further from town) and is about the same price at the Queenslander.
You can get standby rates at some places if you just turn up, as long as it's not peak season.
Kay

Matt,

What type of accomodation did you stay in at Hibiscus Gardens? Did you rent one of the studios or did you have one of the more spacious 1-3 bedroom apartments? The studios is definately more in our price range but I'm afraid they're really small?

Hi Helen, we stayed at Hibiscus at the beggining of June and I have to Agree completely with Matt, the place is EXCELLENT !
We really couldn't believe it when we got there, the place is a gem.
We stayed in one of the 1 bedroom apartments, which had more than enough room, in fact it was huge so I assume that the studios should be quite roomy also. The facilities are excellent( we basically had them to ourselves) and the staff very friendly, we would definetley go back. If you need any more info let me know.

Helen,

We stayed in the studio apartment at Hibiscus and it had plenty of room. There was a kitchenette (fridge, toaster, microwave, etc) Even a little outdoor balcony and table setting.
