Is Auckland worth going to?

We have a tight schedule but our flight from LAX flies into Auckland. I was wondering if it is worth staying there for a day, or going straight to Christchurch from where our 5 day tour begins. What's there to see in Auckland and can it be done in a day. Please help.

There are somethings to see in Auckland. The Auckland tower which is part of the Casino complex. Also, you can go the shopping area of Parnell -very nice -, take a ferry to Devonport, etc. What are you interested in? I found that one day in Auckland was long enough, also, I found that Auckland had more to see than Christchurch. In Christchurch outside of Cathderal Square there isn't much to do.

Auckland is a very nice city, but if I had a day there, I would get out of the city to see at least one of the special North Island sights, since you will be spending the rest of your time on the South Island. You might consider hiring a car and driving over to Rotorua/Taupo to see the geysers and hot springs. Alternatively, there are day tours as well. Another choice would be to drive up to the Bay of Islands and Waitangi, then perhaps take a boat tour. You could visit the Kauri forest on the way back. Lastly, if you don't want to do much driving, I'd suggest taking the boat from the Auckland ferry dock to Rangitoto Island, then hiking up to the top of this cool little volcano for wonderful views of the surrounding city and countryside.

Does your tour include going over the Southern Alps? If not, you might consider heading straight for Christchurch, then taking the TranzAlpine train up to Arthurs Pass. You can hike around for a few hours before the train returns you to Christchurch.

I found Auckland to be a very pleasant city -- reminds me lots of Seattle if you are familiar with that. I would try to spend a day there - the harbor is quite nice and you could take a boat ride -- and it is a nice walking city. I know that Rotorua is a big tourist place -- but sorry Alf -- I think it is way overrated - can't even compare to Yellowstone geysers. South Island does rule however! I especially liked the southern alps area.

As you only have 5 days in NZ, I would give Auckland a miss this time around and head straight to Christchurch.

The LA - Auckland flight is a long one and you might be better off having a relaxing day in Christchurch rather than try to do a full days sightseeing in Auckland.

Christa is absolutely right. You'll be exhausted by the time u get off the plane. So head for Christchurch. Auckland, in all honesty, is not a very interesting city (tho lovely places close by if u have a week or so to travel around).

But if u are bursting with energy then I would go to the Auckland Memorial Museum for a couple of hours. Wonderful exhibits on Maori and S Pacific peoples, and the galleries devoted to the war for which the Museum is named give u a real sense of the catastrophe that war was for the people of this small country. It will come to mind in every town/village/hamlet u see on your later travels.

Yes, if u have the time, that's the place to go - and walk thru the Domain (a huge park) back to the city.

Well Alf, you have some good suggestions but for someone who has just flown in from LA they are way to ambitious, the trip up to BOI is tiring at any time and in one day not very rewarding. Also coming round the west coast way adds a lot of time on to the trip. Also you cannot do justice to
Rotorua in one day either.
I was at the Auckland museum on sunday and yes, it is excellent but I wouldn't like to walk to the city after a long flight the day before.
So memee, maybe save Auckland for next time or if you want to get the most out of one day just take a day tour of the sights in and around our lovely city.
Check out GreatSights website for the day tours.
