Sorry RichardJ, bit of a detour here !

Sally, when the bushfires were raging here a couple of years ago, with literally every State & Territory affected and Canberra losing hundreds of houses and some lives in one searing afternoon; Mike Carlton, one of our journalists & a radio presenter, read it with a Clanad piece as a soundtrack.

It was moving beyond words; at once a wail of lament; tender, healing sounds and an anthem of survival.

3 months in Sydney was not long enough. So 7 nights isn't either. Sydney is a city with TONS to discover. And it's just a great place to be. To meet Australians. To chat.

I'm from Sydney so I am going to be bias in what I say. If you are no the "beach" type of people then you won't really be missing out by not going up to Queensland, other than missing out on the rainforest which is great but if you don't have time, not a real miss.
If you really want to see a good zoo, Taronga zoo is awesome, great view over the harbour and they also have times where you can get your photo taken with a koala, feel some of the animals ect, for a small fee. Also there is a whole area which you can walk through which has wallabies and other animal. The other zoo that is really good is the Canberra Zoo, they have this special tour where you can go and be a zoo keeper for the day, it is expensive but worth every dollar.
There is alot of see in sydney, and one thing I would definately do is the sydney harbour bridge climb, I know you said that you aren't really into the hiking but this is something that is worth doing.
Jenolan Caves are great, and a good day trip to do, and you can also see the blue mountains. I lived for 3 years in the Canadian rockies so I know what "real mountains" look like, ours are different and have their own beauty.
There are so many things to do in sydney that I'm sure you will have a great time.
