If you are coming to Alice Springs.
Hi All,
I do not like to make these posts but anti social behaviour is once again getting out of hand here in Alice. In the last week we have had more than our share of people, predominantly tourists, being targeted. The latest was a Korean tourist who was mugged as he walked a short distance to his accommodation from the Todd Mall.
If you are coming to Alice please make sure you take extra precautions when taking money out at ATM's etc, I would suggest that you should not go walking after dark anywhere in town especially near the Todd river. Try and plan your money transactions in advance and use EFTPOS at stores to get your extra spending money instead of using the ATM's. Do not use an ATM if you see a number of people loitering near by. If you must use an ATM then try to use the ones either in the shopping centres or at your hotels, avoid using the ones in Todd Mall.
Unfortunately you do need to be very wary when walking in and around Alice there is no other way to say it, it is preferrable if you do go walking here that you do it with a travelling companion as there is safety in numbers.
I must also warn travellers driving to and from Alice Springs and Ayres Rock that it is not advisable to stop for anyone whilst doing this journey. If you are flagged down do not get out of your car, keep the doors locked and only allow a small opening in your window not enough for an arm to get in. If things turn bad you can still get away providing you have not let someone in to your car/camper. We have had a recent hi-jacking of a tourist vehicle where the perpetrators strung themselves across the road to get the vehicle to stop. Unfortunately the driver got out of the vehicle and that is when the assailants ransacked it. This occured about 150km's south of Alice on the Stuart Highway.
To some up, just use common sense and be ever vigilant whilst you are here and you will have a safer more enjoyable stay.
Cheers

Paul,
Sorry to hear about the growing problems in Alice Springs. There are many many retirees who will be caravanning in that region over the winter. It would be great if you could put this warning on one of the caravanning websites/forums.

Hi Marg,
I don't visit any caravan forums but if you do then feel free to cut and paste, I would not know which are popular forums for those travellers.
It really is a pity that Alice is suffering from these problems, it seems the more the dogooders get involved with sorting out the problems here the worse they get. I do not know what the solution will be to the anti social behaviour that is getting worse here, the perpetrators know they are untouchable and so they are running a muck. Sorry Mucky this was not in reference to you.
The best I can do is enlighten those that read this forum and hopefully if they come here they will be wary of the problems and take measures to avoid putting themselves in harms way.
I do this every day I walk into town from my house and you really have to be vigilant, I am lucky that I am a guy and relatively fit but I have still had the odd occasion that has me wondering what I am still doing here.
Cheers
