When they weigh your carry-on does that also include your personal item? Some of the business travelers have a carry-on plus their personal item which consists of a lap-top, etc. I was thinking of putting my small purse in a larger personal item and I would have my carry-on plus my personal item. Anyone tried this or am I dreaming?

They won't weigh your purse unless it starts to look too big (eg like a duffle bag) and then they'll call it another carryon.
The last time I had to repack my carryon, the wheels just took up too much of the weight allowance.

Slybea, it may depend on your airline but Air NZ has on their website pictures of when a computer bag is just carrying a computer and when it's stuffed to the point of being counted as a carry on. Normally, a reasonable laptop briefcase, a purse, a coat, a camera are not counted as carry on. But if it looks like you have two carry-ons, it might be trouble. I was suprised to see that A NZ upper class passengers can have 2 carry ons EXCEPT FOR US travelers, who can only have one due to US restrictions (probably having to do with our long security lines).
