Sorry, don't know how to make the link work but this would fit your price range with room to spare I think.

It is about a 5 or 10 minute drive to Wanaka, in the country and with a family. We loved the place and people.

We stayed at The Moorings Motel(http://www.themoorings.co.nz/default.asp) which was wonderful. All units are modern and clean with kitchens, sitting area and balcony. It is only a 2 minute walk to downtown. The price is about $10 over your budget but well worth it. FYI: Most south island accomodation does not have A/C if you are going at peak summer months. However, each night we got a great cool breeze off the lake

Thanks for your replies. I tried Te Wanaka lodge but it was fully booked for when I wanted it. Ended up booking 'The Moorings Motel' - looks like it has been given the thumbs up from CDJD. Only a few days left now before the big adventure!!!

We stayed in a 2BR apartment at The Moorings a few years ago and it was wonderful. Unfortunately, we could only stay in Wanaka for 2 nights--would have liked to stay longer. It's a lovely town and I am sure you will enjoy The Moorings.

We stayed at the Moorings in November 2001 and absolutely loved it! We had a view of the lake that was amazing. We only paid $115 NZ but it was over four years ago.
We had room # 8. It was upstairs with a balcony. The room had a queen bed and a sofa bed, television, refrigerator, and microwave. The bathroom had wonderful rosemary shampoo and conditioner. It also had an iron and ironing board that we used to try to press our clothes dry; we were out in the rain at Fox Glacier earlier that day.
We also received a free newspaper that morning. Desma was working the check-in desk and she was so nice and helpful. We would definitely stay at the Moorings again!
