Good choice if you are in the boutique market.Great location for tourist sydney.
we often walk past it on the way to the movies at opera quays
class, charm ,character are words that come to mind...and away from the bustle of george street.
Of course its pricy but so is everything in the rocks. personally (apart from a schooner of beer at the glenmore hotel) I would not buy anything within cooee of the rocks.

Dear johnj,
I thought you were supposed to be lounging around in Hawai'i now. I hope your not working while you are on vacation. I picked up a quote on one of the discounter sites for AU$ 150. / night which seemed a good deal for the location ( at least less than rates on Waikiki !). Is this location quiet? Do hotels like this have double glazing? Hope you have ( or are having) a great time in Hawai'i

Hi AndrewDavid,
I've stayed at the H. Rocks, and it does have alot of charm and character (they hoist your luggage up via a dumbwaiter). Two things to be aware of...as a historical building - no A/C. And, there is a pub close by that has a "built in alarm clock"...i.e. the recycling truck comes very early in the morning and separates all the booze bottles into 3 separate recycling bins...clink, clink, clink.
This may not be a factor in ALL rooms, maybe just the one I was staying in!

Leave for hawaii tomorrow week....better half is enjoying it there...daily swim up and down wakiki beach..satisfactory budget apartment...sailing with colleagues on windward side (wherever that is)...very pleased with our choice of the big island...impressed with the multiculturalism...surprised at the polynesian network across the pacific to nz...ran acros a "buena vista social club" of hawaiian music at the community hall next to the farmers market.
Not impressed with the bus strke.
I was in town yesterday...walked down to the rocks after my meeting...
cosy, continental are two further words that come to mind about the harbour rocks.similar to the russell but on a quieter street.Great location.Apparently a recycled wool store.
the pub is on the northern side..maybe you could request a "southern room"..but at $150 you may have to take what u r given.
whatever you do don't buy an opal or aboriginal art/didge in the rocks.

Dear Johnj.
Glad your partner is having an "ono" (delicious ) time in Hawai'i and that she got to hear hawai'ian music already. The local music is great, There are hawai'ian music stations on the radio too. Hope you find some hula, really beautiful and expressive.
If you like Japanese woodblock prints one of the Honolulu museums has James Michener's collection.
If we are in Sydney mid April are we worried about A/C that the previous poster mentioned. Thanks for taking a look see while you were down there.
Did I mention the Bamboo restaurant in Hawi on the N. side of the Big Is.? It was for sale when we were there in January. If you like kamaaina aloha life maybe you can purchase it and lead the good life. A good job there is one that allows plenty of beach time.
mahalo,

I bought a battered second hand copy of Micheners Hawaii and she took it with her! she is enjoying reading it whilst there.
One is on a hiding to nothing giving guarantees about the weather...but the probability is that syney in mid april will not need a/c.Perhaps you might consider the old sydney parkroyal just down the street.
Personally i would take a punt...recycled wool store..shades of the days when the quay was full of clippers ready to take the wool clip back to the north of england....days when "australia rode on the sheeps back".
These days australia rides on the back of real estate speculation.
When it comes to la dolce vita I have got my own sliced of "kamaaina oz" already picked out.Perhaps I will buy some hawaiian shirts at hilo hatties and put one on every now and then when I go for a daily surf at Wategoes.
BTW..where you interested in the mereenie loop?...great article in todays
smh about the red centre.Waxes lyrical about the loop..
Talking of a trip round the loop the writer says" I think all of us found this immense, limitless interior of Australia even more impressive than the well known monuments such as Uluru and the Olgas"
My sentiments exactly.
