Great Barrier Reef Marine Park - Whitsunday shark attacks
Shark attacks in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park have apparently been "incredibly rare", but this week there were two within 24 hours -
Tiger sharks shot and killed where two people were attacked in Queensland's Whitsundays - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Apparently both attacks occurred in a so-called harbour and both victims were from chartered vessels, so perhaps the sharks were attracted by waste either thrown or otherwise discharged from those or nearby vessels. Must admit when I snorkelled on an outer reef (Agincourt) about 30 years ago - a magnificent experience out of the sight of land - I wondered about the advisability of the crew dumping stuff in the water to attract fish to improve the side show, but remember being told that sharks were rarely seen. Another thing to bear in mind of course is that there are sharks and sharks.

"Another thing to bear in mind of course is that there are sharks and sharks." Which in Australia is like saying there are snakes and snakes. Usually you don't want to linger while you find out whether they're goodies or baddies.
