Gibb River Road
My wife and I plan to travel with our 4 years old daughter from Darwin to Broome (and later on to Perth and Augusta) end of october till mid november 1999. How about the weather and track conditions in Kakadu National Park and on the Gibb River Road during that period of the year? What are the best places to camp? Thanks for your answers, suggestions and advices.

Pedro,
You are getting very close to the wet season in the period you have nominated to travel. You should be ok in Kakadu to do the normal tourist activities and the wet season is (so I've been told) a great time to see Kakadu.
Your ability to travel the Gibb river road at that time of year will pretty much depend on the type of vehicle you intend hiring and the weather. There are a number of places to camp including Mount Barnett and Windjana National Park. be worned however, these are not towns, but outback stations. Even the towns at either end of the road, Kununurra and Derby do not have big populations (a couple of thousand people) but they do have all facilities you will require.
My advice, watch the weather, get the road conditions and tell the police what your intended itinery is so people know if you get into trouble.

Good luck. Be SURE you have a sturdy, reliable vehicle. We were on the Gibb River road but branched off towards Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek (fabulous). Anyway, we heard that a vehicle the same as ours (a bus), had had all its windows rattled out, as well as lost its axle. It is not a fun road to travel in a vehicle not properly equipped for the job. I also agree that it is imperative you advise the police before setting out on the road. It is wild - but it is beautiful.

A further point re Kakadu - if you are heading up that way, be sure to do Litchfield National Park. It is very beautiful, particularly if there have been some good rains. Email me if you would like some info on the journey to Perth. I have been all around Australia and can suggest some sights not necessarily mentioned in tourist books.
