No, Kathy, I wasn't serious. I had nothing better to do and thought it would be side-splittingly hilarious to put up a completely pointless post.
Thanks kerikeri - not a bad idea; unfortunately insurance implications preclude it.
I'll start again. I'm going down to the South Island later this year and staying at Arrowtown. There will be six of us with lots of gear, and I have had trouble finding a car hire company that does roof boxes. Plus we're going for two weeks, so hiring a sufficiently large vehicle even without a roof box I'm looking at 2K. So I'm looking into the viability of sending my own car down. I've heard of people freighting their cars down via train, but cannot find anything about it on NZ Rail's website.
Hence this thread.
Cheers.

Paul,
You can rent a Toyota Previa full size van, automatic, 4DR in either Christchurch or Queenstown. (I've done this for 2 couples + golf clubs and I know that the van will accommodate six passengers).
Wouldn't that size work for you?

Not really. I have a Territory 7 Seater but 5 snowboards, 1 set of skis plus all the boots and other paraphernalia takes up a lot of space. Plus at the end of the day it's all wet, making for an uncomfortable ride back to the accommodation. The other thing is I I don't want to muck around with snowchains so would much prefer a 4WD.
