Fraser Island-diving trips
HI,
We are staying in Hervey Bay and want to go to Fraser Island for diving, at the moment we are looking to fly there and back and do the diving on that day. Is it worth staying over night to check out the rest of the island? Or do the 4WD tours? We will be a group of 4 or 5 adults.

I don't know much about the dive sites around Fraser Island, but I do know that it is a really bad idea to fly right after diving. The only way that this is at all safe is if you are assured that the plane will stay at low altitudes.

Fraser Island is not part of Great Barrier Reef and for diving you'd be far better off flying to Lady Elliot Island from Hervey Bay, the reef's southern-most island.
As you're a diver you probably know this, but as Alf says, you need to allow some time between diving and flying, depending on depth of dive and altitude of aircraft, which is this case should be quite low. Well, it was when I once took the short flight between Fraser and Lady Elliot.
Fraser Island is large, the world's largest sand island with a World Heritage listing, with rainforests and miles of beaches. but the ocean can be treacherous and sharks are common. Beautiful clear perched inland lakes are the places to swim, the island is definitely worth more than a daytrip.

Hi - Fraser Is is definitely worth a few days. The inland lakes are lovely - though, as always, it rather depends on where else you are planning to go.
And I didn't know you could fly there from Hervey Bay. Have to say sounds a little strange as it's so easy to go by boat. Also have never heard of it referred to as a diving destination, but as you are divers I guess you have checked it out.
If you are 4 or 5, and decide to go for longer than a day, then I know what I would do - go for one of the drive your own 4wd packages. It's "the thing to do" thereabouts.
Have fun.

Thanks for the replies, I must admit it's actually my sister who is the professional diver and i'm just a beginner! maybe I have got the islands wrong by the sounds of the post and should be headed to Lady Elliot. And thanks for the bits about being careful with the flying-I didn't know that either!
I will do some research on Lady Elliot...
