First holiday to Australia - where should we visit?

My boyfriend and I are planning a holiday to Australia next year 2011.
We have never been before and would like to see as much as possible, which are the best places to visit?
We would probably go for about 3 weeks and would have a budget of about £4500.
Also, which is the best time to visit (weather and cost taken in to consideration)
Thanks!

Australia is such a large country so you will need to define your interests. If you want to see Darwin/Kakadu etc, then our winter (May to August) is the dry season and the best time to visit those areas.
If you prefer city life, then September to November, or March to May would be best.

Fly into Cairns and spend some time in the Great Barrier Reef area. Fly then to Alice Springs for the Outback and Uluru. Next destination Melbourne, rent a car for the Great Ocean Road. If time a couple of days in Tasmania and then of course Sydney. The tried, true and best itinerary for OZ.

It does depend a bit on when you are coming.
