Fiji vs. Tahiti???

We're going to NZ in December and want to do a stop in either Fiji or Tahiti on the way home. We love snorkeling and chilling on the beach.
Which is better?
Which is cheaper?
Fiji, hands down, avoid the Coral Coast, go to Taveuni if you can.

Carol,
Agree with Fred...Fiji is fantastic. It is also much less expensive that Tahiti. You may not have the same degree of beauty in the landscape but it is still very beautiful...jus stay away from the main cities (or towns). The people of Fiji are so friendly and welcoming...... Gotta be Fiji!
Diane

Been to both and agree with other responses. Tahiti is touristy and much more expensive. Fijiians are incredibly warm and friendly and make you feel welcomed. Not so in Tahiti - especially Bora Bora. They are resentful of tourist. Have fun.

Tahiti is REALLY expensive, but has nice beaches and pretty landscape. If you love to snorkel, then Fiji is the answer. The underwater beauty of Fiji is top notch and hard to beat. The Fijians are also the friendliest people in the world by far! Taveuni is excellent for snorkeling and diving, but not so great for lying around on the beach - for great snorkeling and beautiful beaches try the outer islands on the west of the main Island (The Mamanuca and Yasawa chains). My personal vote would be Matamanoa - great location, good accomodations, nice white sand beach, fantastic snorkeling, and the best value for your money.

My vote goes for Tahiti - the most beatiful islands in the world.
You can make either Fiji or Tahiti outrageously expecive, or you can make them both affordable. There are Tahiti packages for under $1,500 p/p with air for a week. Check out New Frontiers at
http://www.newfrontiers.com
