Do you need a 4WD for Cape Trib and Daintree?

My wife and I are going to Queensland in 2 weeks. Do you need a 4WD vehicle to drive to Cape Tribulation and to see the Daintree rainforest?

No, you'll be fine with a regular car or van. The roads are paved all the way to Cape Tribulation. Check with your rental company though - most do not allow you to take the car off of paved/sealed roads.

You might experience a wait at the Daintree ferry crossing. It took us about an hour. After you cross the river, go about 1/4 mile (500 meters) and pull off to the side of the road. On the left side, you'll see thousands of giant bats that hang in the trees there during the day. It's quite an eerie sight!

John in Miami

Thanks. I saw the road marked "Bloomfield Track" was 4WD Access only and I was concerned that we wouldn't get to see the better parts of the area without one.

As John says, a normal car is all you need to go as far as Cape Tribulation but you would definitely need a 4WD if you wanted to keep going north along the Bloomfield Track. (There are a number of 4WD tours which will take you there if you don't want to hire a 4WD yourself.)

At this time of year you won't have any trouble with delays at the ferry - I think John may have been here during the busy visitor season which is mainly from June through to September. Also, I think the bats have moved on now - they tend to move their colonies depending on their food source.

Anyway, I hope you have a great holiday!

Bill, you'll be fine as far as Cape Trib then the road is gravel/dirt from there on. There is only one main road from the Daintree River crossing up to Cape Trib with a few side roads off that. We drove up from Port Douglas in our hire car, took a picnic and ate on the beach at Cape Trib - beautiful beach! Watch out for crocs though, there are warning signs all over. Stopped at a lovely spot called Thorntons for a cold drink on the way back. The cable ferry across the Daintree is $16 return (from memory), we bought bananas from a roadside stall to munch while waiting in line. Enjoy!
Kay
