Diving trip/honeymoon in Fiji- suggestions?

Travel date:late May 2002
3 couples of experienced/intermediate divers.
NO kids, please!I'm allergic to them.
We want a nice, not too fancy, private, smallish place to go.

We'll mostly dive, do some hiking, would like to eat some good meals and enjoy the 'local feel'.
NO big, corporate-feeling resorts, or fancy-schmanczy hotels, please.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Suggest you check out Qamea (no "u") Beach Resort. Web site: www.qamea.com is an accurate description of the property. Their email is: [email protected]. It would seem to fit all of your requirements. We like it well enough to go every year for two weeks for the past ten...Enjoy...Else

anyone who says they are "allergic to kids" probaly wouldn't be very good company at any Fijian Resort.
Please post us back and lest us know where/when you're going so I can avoid being there at the same time as you!

Check out Dive Kadavu. They don't allow kids under 12. We were there in August with out two teenage boys and it was wonderful. You must realize that Fiji is a family country and that the New Zealanders and Australians use it as we do Hawaii - they go their with their kids. So, perhaps you want to select another place, maybe Tahiti. The Fijians are the most wonderful people you will ever meet and the friendliest. They love family and kids, but are very private. You will not interact with their families unless you are invited by them to come into their villages.
Dive Kadavu limits to 20 people, I think, so you will definitely get the feeling you want. Kadavu has wonderful diving, hiking, etc. etc. All meals are eaten there as there is no other place to go. It's a true no-frills diving resort with lote of charm. As far as "local feel" you pretty much have to stick to the resorts in Fiji as the villages are off limits to guests unless you befriend the village people. I am guessing with your comments regarding kids that they will not befriend you, so you don't have to worry about it.

I would recommend Garden Isle Resort on Taveuni. They cater to divers and have several packages depending on how long you intend to stay. Most of the dives are in the Somosomo Strait, between Taveuni and Vanua Levu - tons of beautiful soft coral, and many varieties of fish. Many of the dives are drift dives, and its good to be more experienced on those. Not much of a beach - at low tide you have to take a small boat out to the larger aluminum dive boats.

The open-air dining room looks out on the Strait and you are pretty much guaranteed spectacular sunsets every evening. Very friendly people, a nice Fijian string band will serenade you each night, and they can help you with taxis to various hiking spots around Taveuni. In particular, there are a couple of nice coastal walks and hikes to great waterfalls. The hotel is a two-story structure with about 20 rooms right outside of the little town of Waiyevo (a general store, restaurant, post office, and a few houses). There were 3-4 kids there total, but the place certainly has an adult feel to it (no kids menu in restaurant, bar on the terrace, etc.).

hi there
My recommendation would be Tokoriki Island (No kids under 12 exept special weeks).
We have been to Fiji several times and were married on Tokoriki June2000.
In all our travels to Fiji we have never experenced a resort like tokoriki.
The atmosphere was totally unique..It was like you were part of there family, nothing was a problem and the staff were very laid back and relaxed.
It is a small relaxed boutique resort with the best food i have ever had.
They have 28 or 29 bures and if you can afford it the honeymoon bures are fantastic, like being in a treehouse.
www.tokoriki.com
BULA KATFISH,
WELL EVERYTHING YOU AHVE DESCRIBED IS LALATI ISLAND RESORT AND IT IS MUCH NICER THAN ANY OTHER RESORT NAMED AS I HAVE BEEN TO THEM ALL! LALATI ONLY HOLDS 5 COUPLES AT ANY GIVEN TIME AND HAS AWARD WINNING CUISINE AND DIVING. YOU ARE VERY MUCH A PART OF THE FIJIAN CULTURE AT ONE OF THESE SMALLER RESORTS. GO TO THEIR WEB SITE WWW.LALATI-FIJI.COM
ANYWAYS THE SECOND CHOICE WOULD BE QAMEA. TOKORIKI IS NOT KNOWN FOR ITS DIVING BUT RATHER THE BEACH. DIVE KADAVU IS A MORE RUSTIC ENVIRONMENT AND THE SIMILAR QUALITY OF DIVING AS LALATI AS THEY USE SIMILAR DIVE SITE....ENJOY, BUT BOOK EARLY AS THE AIRFARE IS SOLD OUT THROUGH MAY 2002...
