Day trip to the Blue Mountains - transportion? sights?

We (two people) are planning to take a day trip to the Blue Mountains the end of September, starting and ending the day in Sydney. We'll be staying in the Rocks area of Sydney. I'd appreciate advice on the best ways to get from Sydney to the Blue Mountains. Should we rent a car in Sydney? (If so, which car rental agency is the most reasonably priced?) An alternative would be to take the train from Sydney to Katoomba and then use Blue Mountains Explorer Bus to get around.

I'd also appreciate recommendations of the best sights to see and things to do during a day in the Blue Mountains. (I know we could easily spend more than a day there, but at the moment, we're planning to do this as a day trip.)

Thanks!

I've had a look at the explorer bus and for one day, I think train the the bus would be a better option than driving. If you had more time, then you might warrant a hire car, but to hire car, then get out of sydney .... why bother?

the explorer bus looks great and you can do lots of different things. i'm no mountains expert, so I'll let others tell you what not to miss - although three sisters is a given and I really like the railway, skyway things too.

If you can get away early a car would give you more flexibilty..

is most economical.

By car you can do..
euroka clearing
lunch at Leura
three sisters
walk in the valley floor
incline railway

and maybe featherdale wildlife park on the way back.

Visited Queensland and travelled from Coolangatta, Surfers Paradise to Sunshine Coast. Enroute through Mt Cotton and visited Sirromet Winery and the Tambourine mountaines. Car Hire Company: East Coast Car Rentals which is very similar to Bayswater in Perth and Sydney.
