Thanks so much to everyone for the very helpful suggestions. It sounds like we could have our own breakfast with the birds if we stayed at the Red Mill House B&B or the Daintree Mangroves Wildlife Sanctuary. They both sound nice. Can anyone raise any issues about one or the other that might help me decide between the two. We will only be staying one night and only have the next day to see the Daintree rainforest.

Hard one judielee, and I'd stay in either like a shot. Both have great hosts, Red Mill House has nature and birds in abundance; Donna and Gill have this amazing wildlife sanctuary as described by Sunbird and LizF, mostly the birds are in massive aviaries but truly an impressive collection of Australian parrots and finches, some unknown to area, some local. Just one example is the sweetest little ganggang cockatoo called "Creaky Door", this bird is from SE Australia, thousands of kms away. Apart from the animals Sunbird has mentioned, there's big crocs (fenced off), a massive python (well caged), emus, kangaroos, and best of all, the lovely little sugar gliders. So you're right in saying you really don't need Breakfast with the Birds at Rainforest Habitat if you stay at either.

I agree with Pat - both are so good and each has something different and special to offer!
Red Mill House is right in tiny Daintree Village and close to several restaurants, timber gallery, pottery gallery, wildlife-spotting river cruises and a couple of shops.
Daintree Mangroves is about 15 minutes away from the Village with it's own restaurant and has lovely large airy rooms overlooking lush gardens. It is on Daintree Road but quite secluded from anything else.
